Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about red light therapy.

What is red light therapy?
Red light therapy (RLT), also called photobiomodulation (PBM), is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate natural processes inside your cells. Researchers believe these wavelengths help support cellular energy production, which may contribute to skin health, tissue repair, muscle recovery, and other biological functions. While some uses are supported by strong research, others are still being studied, so it’s important to separate evidence-based benefits from marketing claims.
For most healthy adults, red light therapy is generally considered safe when used as directed. It is non-invasive, does not use ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and is typically well tolerated. Reported side effects are uncommon and usually mild, such as temporary redness, eye discomfort from improper eye protection, or skin irritation. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or take medications that increase light sensitivity, consult your healthcare provider before beginning treatment.
Yes, but not for every claim you see online. Research provides the strongest evidence for certain skin concerns, pattern hair loss, and some types of pain and muscle recovery. For other popular claims, such as weigh loss or treating chronic diseases, the evidence is limited or mixed. Like many therapies, results depend on using an appropriate device, following evidence-based treatment protocols, and having realistic expectations.
Not exactly. Red light therapy often uses both visible red light and near-infrared (NIR) light, but they are different parts of the light spectrum. Red light primarily affects tissues closer to the skin’s surface, while near-infrared light penetrates deeper into muscles, joints, and other tissues. Many modern devices combine both wavelengths to target multiple tissue depths in a single treatment.
